Funkcija
urediProtein koji je kodiran ovim genom je član potporodice AKT serin/treonin protein kinaza. Poznato je da su AKT-kinaze regulatori ćelijske signalizacije kao odgovor na insulin i faktore rasta. Oni su uključeni u širok spektar bioloških procesa uključujući proliferaciju ćelija, diferencijaciju, apoptozu, tumorigenezu, kao i sintezu glikogena i unos glukoze. Pokazalo se da je ova kinaza stimulirana faktoru rasta izvedenom iz trombocita (PDGF), insulinom i insulinolikim faktorom rasta (IGF1). Opisane su alternativno prerađene varijante transkripta koje kodiraju različite izoforme.[8] Miševi kojima nedostaje Akt3 imaju normalan metabolizam glukoze (bez dijabetesa), imaju približno normalnu tjelesnu težinu, ali imaju 25% smanjenje mase mozga. Inače, Akt3 je visoko eksprimiran u mozgu.
