SWEET1 je široko eksprimirann transporter glukoze.[6] Kako je porodica SWEET identificirana relativno nedavno, cijeli spektar njenih funkcija kod životinja još nije jasan.[8] Međutim, goveđi homolog SLC50A1 povezan je sa koncentracijom laktoze u mlijeku,[9] a homolog CiRGA u morski om mlazuCiona intestinalis neophodan je za diferencijaciju tkiva tokom embriogeneze, posebno za razvoj notohorda.[10]
