Funkcija
urediRibosomi, organele koji kataliziraju sintezu proteina, sastoje se od male 40S i velike 60S podjedinice. Zajedno sastoje se od četiri tipa RNK i približno 80 strukturno različitih proteina. Ovaj gen kodira ribosomski protein koji je komponenta 60S podjedinice. Protein pripada porodici ribosomskih proteina L23P. Nalazi se u citoplazmi. Može biti jedna od ciljnih molekula koje su uključene u posredovanje u inhibiciji rasta pomoću interferona. U kvascima se odgovarajući protein veže na određeno mjesto na 26S rRNK. Ovaj gen je ko-transkribiran sa genima U42A, U42B, U101A i U101B malče nukleolusne RNK, koji se nalaze svoj treći, prvi, drugi i četvrti intron. Kao što je tipski za gene koji kodiraju ribosomske proteine, postoji više prerađenih pseudogena ovog gena raspršenih širom genoma.[7]
Klinički značaj
urediL23a je identificiran kao autoimunska meta koja uzrokuje oblik reumatoidni artritis kod miševa i koji također uzrokuje reakciju T-ćelija i autoantitijela kod pacijenata sa reumatoidnim artritisom.[8]
