Ovaj gen ima veću ekspresiju u ćelijama koje eksprimiraju p53, nego u kontrolnim ćelijama i sada je i rana meta indukcije p53 posredovane apoptoze. Protein kodiran ovim genom sadrži šest pretpostavljenih transmembranskih domena i može potisnuti rast ćelija induciranjem apoptotske ćelijske smrti putem kaspaze 9 i mitohondrijskog puta. Ovaj gen se nalazi na ljudsko hromosomu 11, sekvenca q24, regiji koja se često mijenja u karcinomi. Alternativna prerada RNK|Alternativna prerada rezultira u dvije varijante transkripta koje kodiraju različite izoforme.^[7]
