MOGAT2 i srodni MOGAT3 geni su članovi porodice acilglicerol o-aciltransferaza (DGAT2/MOGAT) i uključeni su u sintezu diacilglicerola (DAG) i triacilglicerola (TAG) iz monoacilglicerola (MAG).

MOGAT2 i MOGAT3 su geni sa jednom kopijom kod gotovo svih sisara. Međutim, kod preživara oba gena su prošla tandemsku ekspanziju gena), što ukazuje na razvoj funkcionalnosti. MOGAT2 ima više od pet tandemski dupliciranih kopija kod ovaca, pri čemu je prva kopija izražena u duodenumu, a posljednja eksprimirana je u koži, bez ikakvog izraza kopije otkrivene u jetri.[5][6][7]
