Ovaj gen kodira membranski povezani enzim koji se nalazi na tački grananja mevalonatnog puta. Kodirani protein je prvi specifični enzim u biosintezi holesterola, koji katalizira dimerizaciju dvije molekule farnezil difosfata u reakciji u dva koraka u obliku skvalena.
