Funkcija
urediMitohondrijski ribosomski proteini sisara kodirani su jedarnim genima i pomažu u sintezi proteina unutar mitohondrija. Mitohondrijski ribosomi (mitoribosomi) sastoje se od male podjedinice 28S i velike podjedinice 39S. Imaju procijenjenih 75% proteina prema rRNK sastavu u poređenju sa prokariotskim ribosomima, gdje je ovaj odnos obrnut.
Druga razlika između mitoribosoma sisara i prokariotskih ribosoma je ta što ovi drugi sadrže 5S rRNK. Među različitim vrstama, proteini koji se sastoje od mitoribosoma uveliko se razlikuju po sekvenci, a ponekad i po biohemijskim svojstvima, što sprečava lahko prepoznavanje homologija po sekvenci. Ovaj gen kodira protein podjedinice 28S koji pripada porodici ribosomnih proteina S18P. Kodirani protein jedan je od tri koji ima značajnu sličnost u sekvenci sa bakterijskim proteinima S18. Primarni transkripti tri ljudska mitohondrijska proteina S18 nisu međusobno bliskije povezane s prokariotskim proteinima S18. Pseudogeni koji odgovaraju ovom genu nalaze se na dugim kracima (q) hromozoma 1 i 2.[6]
