Ovaj protein je kodirani član porodice somatotropin / prolaktin hormona koji imaju važnu ulogu u kontroli rasta. Ovaj gen, zajedno s četiri druga srodna gena, nalazi se na lokusu za hormon rasta, na hromosomu 17, gdje se smjenjuju u istoj transkripcijskoj orijentaciji, aranžmani za koje se smatra da su evoluirali u niz gena duplikata.

Pet gena dijele izuzetno visok stepen identiteta sekvence. Alternative nastaju preradom iRNK, stvarajući dodatne izoforme svakog od pet hormona rasta. To dovodi do dalje različitosti i potencijala za specijalizaciju. Ovaj posebni član porodice se stvara u hipofizi, ali ne i u posteljičnom tkivu, kao što je slučaj za ostala četiri gena u lokusu hormona rasta. Mutacije u ili delecijskim genima dovode do nedostatka hormona rasta i niskog rasta.[9]
