Funkcija
urediProtein koji je kodiran ovim genom je član natporodice ATP-vezujućih kasetih transportera (ABC). ABC proteini prenose različite molekule kroz van- i unutarćelijske membrane. ABC geni su podijeljeni u sedam različitih potporodica (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). Ovaj protein je član potporodica White. Protein kodiran ovim genom funkcionira kao polutransporter, kako bi ograničio crijevnu apsorpciju i promovirao žučno izlučivanje sterola. Eksprimira se tkivno specifično u jetri, debelom i ostalim crijevima. Ovaj gen je tandemski raspoređen na hromosomu 2, u orijentaciji glava-glava sa članom porodice ABCG8. Mutacije ovog gena mogu doprinijeti akumulaciji sterola i aterosklerozi, a uočene su i kod pacijenata sa sitosterolemijom.[7]
