Sir Paul Rycaut (1628–1700) bio je britanski diplomat, autor i ljubitelj putovanja.[1] Rycaut je služio kao sekretar Britanske ambasade u Carigradu.[1] Poslije toga, bio je konzul Levant Company u Smirni, Turska.[2] Bio je engleski ambasador u Hamburgu i Felow u Britanskom kraljevskom duštvu (British Royal Society).

Rycaut je rođen u novembru ili decembru 1628. u Aylesfordu, Kent.[2] His parents were Peter and Mary Rycaut.[2] Njegov otac, Peter Rycaut, porijeklom je bio Španac i predstavnik u Španske monarhije u Londonu.[2] Pozajmio je kralju novac za vrijeme rata sa Holandijom. Zbog toga ga je Cromwell protjerao iz Engleske, uz oduzimanje icjelokupne imovine. Rycautova majka, Mary van der Colge, bila je također španskog porijekla i član Huguenotskog društva u Londonu.[2] Rycaut je naučio grčki i latinski jezik vjerovatno još tokom školovanja u Kentu.[2]

Diplomirao je na Trinity College, Cambridge, 1650.[2] U 1652., primljen je u Gray Inn. Kada je otputovao u Španiju da pita španskog kralja Filipa IV za otplatu kredita njegovog oca, a kralj ga je toplo primio. Kralj je sredio Rycautu da besplatno boravi na '“Univerzitetu Alcalá“. U 1659, Rycaut postao je privatni sekretar Heneagea Fincha koji je bio ambasador kompanije Levantu Carigradu.[2] Tako postoje podaci da je Rycaut naučio turski jezik i počeo da piše svoju knjigu Sadašnjost Država Otomanskog carstva (The Present State of the Ottoman Empire).[2] U Englesku se vratio 1665.

Rycaut je zatim poslan u Smirnu, 1667., kao agent Levant Company, gdje je proveo 11 godina.[2] Nakon toga, vratio se u Englesku (1778.), gdje je postao lični sekretar kralja Williama III Engleskog tokom dvije godine.[2] Zatim je postavljen za ambasadora u Hamburgu.[2] Promoviran je na čast viteza, 1685. U London se vratzio 28. marta 1700.; 9. novembra te godine doživo srčani napad. Umro je 16. novembra 1700.[2]
