Mali proteini su raznolika klasa proteinskih nabora (obično dužine <100 aminokiselina).[1][2][3] Njihovu trodimenzijsku strukturu obično održavaju disulfidni mostovi,[4] metalni ligandi,[5] i/ili kofaktori kao što je hem. Neki mali proteini služe važnim regulatornim funkcijama direktnom interakcijom s određenim enzimima i stoga su također zanimljiv alat za biotehnološke primjene u mikroorganizmima.[6]
