Za STM, dobrom rezolucijom se smatra 0,1 nm poprečno, i 0,01 nm po dubini. Sa ovakvom rezolucijom, pojedinačni atomi na površini materijala su jednostavno uslikani, sa mogućnošću manipulacije.
 
Mnoge druge mikroskopske tehnike su razvijene na bazi STM.
