Franjevački red danas ima oko 2.000.000 pripadnika, i ima svoje sjedište u [[Rim]]u.
Franjevci su igrali istaknutu ulogu u istorijskom i kulturnom životu [[Bosna|Bosne]] i [[Hrvatska|Hrvatske]]. U [[Bosna|Bosnu]] dolaze kao papinski inkvizitori i misionari koji rade na iskorjenjivanju učenja [[Bosanski krstjani|bosanskih krstjana]], тј. [[Bogumili|Bogumila]] već [[1291]]. godine i tu trajno ostaju, a franjevačka provincija [[Bosna Srebrena]] je jedina ustanova koja neprekidno djeluje od srednjeg vijeka pa do danas. [[1339]]. godine se ustanovljava Bosanska vikarija, na čelu sa fra [[Peregrin Saksonac|Peregrinom Saksoncem]], koji je imao značajnu ulogu i na dvoru bosanskog bana [[Stjepan II Kotromanić|Stjepana II Kotromanića]], a naimenovan je i [[Bosanski Biskup|bosanskim biskupom]].
Prvi franjevački samostan u [[Bosna|Bosni]] je podignut u [[Mila]]ma kod [[Visoko]]g oko [[1340]]. godine, a kasnije su izgrađeni i samostani u [[Kraljeva Sutjeska|Sutjesci]], [[Olovo (BiH)|Olovu]], [[Srebrenica|Srebrenici]], [[Fojnica|Fojnici]], [[Kreševo|Kreševu]]... Ovakav razvoj bosanske vikarije ju je doveo u vodeći položaj na čitavom [[Balkan]]u, a njeno područje se proteže od [[Apulija|Apulije]] na jugoistoku [[Italija|Italije]] pa do [[Crno More|Crnog Mora]]. U prvoj polovini 15. vijeka se neke manje oblasti osamostaljuju i odvajaju, a nakon Osmanlijskog osvajanja [[Bosna|Bosne]] dolazi do podjele vikarije [[1514]]. na Bosnu Srebrenu (na prostoru pod Turskom okupacijom) i Bosnu-Hrvatsku (na preostalom području) i obje ove vikarije su [[1517]]. godine izdignute u rang provincija. Sultan [[Mehmed El-Fatih]] je [[1463]]. godine izdao dokument na osnovu kojeg se franjevcima dozvoljava dalje djelovanje u Bosni. U 16. vijeku se područje provincije Bosne Srebrene širi sa Osmanlijskim osvajanjima, pa obuhvata i [[Slavonija|Slavoniju]], [[Srijem]], [[Banat]] i južnu [[Ugarska|Ugarsku]] (do [[Budim]]a). U 18. vijeku, dolazi do osamostaljivanja dalmatinskih samostana, a potom se [[1757]]. izdvajaju i prekosavski samostani, te se [[1758]]. godine ustanovljava područje Bosne Srebrene koje odgovara granicama današnje Bosne i Hercegovine, a [[1847]] se ustanovljava i zasebna hercegovačka provincija. Brojni franjevci Bosne Srebrene su imali neprocjenjiv doprinos kulturnom i naučnom životu Bosne i Hercegovine, a najistaknutiji među njima bili su: [[Divković Matija|Matija Divković]], [[Nikola Lašvanin]], [[Filip Lastrić]], [[Ivan Franjo Jukić]],[[Grga Martić]] kao i mnogi drugi.
