Commentaire

Commandée par Catherine de Médicis dans les années 1550, cette miniature représente les deux épouses et les quatre filles de François Ier. Ces dames sont très facilement reconnaissables puisque l'artiste a recopié les portraits en dessin de ces dames que nous connaissons.

La femme placée au centre est Claude de France, première épouse de François Ier. Son portrait a été réalisé à partir d'un dessin qui se trouve aujourd'hui au Louvre : [1] archive copy at the Wayback Machine

La petite fille placée au premier plan à gauche est Charlotte morte à 8 ans en 1524. Portrait réalisé à partir des dessins et tableaux de Jean Clouet dont l'un d'entre eux se trouve aujourd'hui au Institute of art de Minneapolis : [2] [3]

La femme placée à gauche derrière Claude est Renée de France, la soeur cadette de Claude (10 ans de différence).

La femme placée à droite derrière Claude est Madeleine (1520-1537), éphémère reine d'Ecosse. Portrait réalisé à partir des tableaux de Corneille de Lyon. La petite fille placée au premier plan à droite est Marguerite (1523-1574), future duchesse de Savoie.

Enfin la femme placée tout au fond à gauche est la deuxième épouse de François Ier, Eleonore de Habsbourg (1498-1558). Portrait réalisé à partir d'un dessin de Clouet la représentant en tenue de deuil blanc des reines de France, conservé au musée Condé de Chantilly  :[6]
